Winter activities around Gästehaus Pernull

Winter activities around Gästehaus Pernull

During the winter season there is a lot to do around our accommodation. As a passionate winter sports enthusiast, of course you can indulge yourself on the snowy slopes; skiing and snowboarding are of course the most well‑known activities, but how about heli‑skiing, hiking, winter sledding, or ice skating? But even for the vacationer who prefers a quieter approach there is plenty to do. Treat yourself, for example, to a delightful winter wellness treatment in the spa and enjoy the sunlit terraces.

Our Gästehaus is located close to the Italian border, which means we have a more stable climate here than the slightly more northern parts of Austria. That means the sun often shines here (up to 100 hours more) and you can fully enjoy the sun, snow, and winter fun.

There is therefore a lot to do in the area, and to make it a bit easier for you, we provide some tips with extra information below. But this is still far from everything! So keep an eye on our Facebook page as well, because there we give even more tips with additional background info!

Nassfeld ski area

Nassfeld is the largest ski area in Carinthia with 30 modern cable cars and lifts. The area has about 110 km of slopes in various difficulty levels, making it very suitable for both beginners and experienced winter sports enthusiasts. You can ski and snowboard here, and for snowboarders there is even a snowboard fun park where you can practice your snowboarding skills.

You can relax in one of the many super cozy pubs. Here you can warm up and enjoy typical Austrian delicacies.

Ski areas Weißbriach, Kötschach-Mauthen and Weissensee

These three ski areas are smaller than Nassfeld and therefore very suitable for families. Adults and children can find the right offerings here.

Cross‑country skiing in Austria and Italy

Cross‑country skiing is done here on a network of over 300 km of trails. Several trails have been awarded the Kärntner Loipengütesiegel. This network consists of perfectly groomed classic cross‑country tracks and skating tracks. 18 of these trails are located at 1,000 to 1,500 m above sea level, ensuring snow on these tours!

Snow‑covered trails can also be found on, for example:

  • Nassfeld (with routes that go through Austria and neighboring Italy).
  • Lesachtal (6 km).
  • Dellach/Kirchbach (5 km).
  • Weißensee (3 km).

The Villacher Alpenarena at the foot of the Dobratsch is very popular with cross‑country skiers. The trails are perfectly groomed here, and on weekdays you can even go there until 8:00 p.m. Special spotlights provide ample light and a fairy‑tale atmosphere.

The trails at Tröpolach (a total of about 18 km and 8 km) are also comfortably reachable by the free Skibus, which stops right next to our Gästehaus.

Snowshoeing

For hiking enthusiasts, there is also a special winter version: snowshoeing!

During a snowshoe walk you get (as the name suggests) special shoes attached that allow you to step easily through the snow. These walks can be taken with a guide, so you see the most beautiful spots in the area. Warm up nicely while enjoying a hot chocolate in one of the cozy mountain huts.

Ice skating on Pressegger See and Weissensee

Ice skating on natural ice is done here in the area at Pressegger See and Weissensee. Pressegger See has about 55 hectares of excellent natural ice, consisting of several different ice rinks, including a groomed 2.5 km loop. At Strandbad Hermagor you can rent skates and find changing rooms. You can also take a beautiful walk around the lake (Slow Trail).

The 6.5 km² large Weissensee in Carinthia freezes every year around 25 November. It starts from the small western part, and by mid‑December the lake is fully covered with a 40 cm ice layer. Here you can enjoy ice rinks ranging from 4 to 25 km long! A real treat for the seasoned ice skater!!

Traditionally, an alternative Elfstedentocht is also organized here every January. For two weeks, many Dutch people can be found in the area, all wanting to make their round on this beautiful natural ice.

Sledding on and near Nassfeld

Winter fun for the whole family: glide down a snowy slope on a special sled (a rodel)! There are 5 sledding tracks and paths built on and near Nassfeld with lighting: Rodelbahn Rattendorf, Rodelbahn Guggenberg, Rodelbahn Berggeist/Weissbriach, Rodelbahn Sonnleitn, Rodelbahn Gailberghöhe.

The Rodelbahn Kreuth ob Jenig and Rodelbahn Naggler Alm are only open during the day.

If you prefer to stay nearby and sledding still seems a bit too exciting? We also have 2 wooden sleds at our guest accommodation that you can take free of charge to go sledding nearby.

Horse carriage ride through the snow

In winter you can take a scenic ride with a horse‑drawn carriage three times a week from Sonnleitn on Nassfeld.

Enjoy the beautiful surroundings and panoramic view. Dress warmly, bring a blanket, and enjoy. The ride takes about an hour and is suitable for children and adults. Reservation is required. We are happy to help you with making the reservation.
