We are Robbie and Natascha and since November 2020 the proud owners of Gästehaus Pernull in idyllic Carinthia, Austria. Our story is quite a bit of a goosebumps moment (even now that I am writing this piece, I can feel it again).
In 2001 I completed the Hotel Management School in Maastricht and since then I've always had in my mind, so I would like to start a business around my 40th birthday. In 2012 we saw an episode of the program “I'm leaving”. For the reader who is not familiar with it: “I'm leaving” is a fairly popular and well-watched real life program that is broadcast on Dutch television. In each episode, people are followed who venture abroad to build a new life there. When we saw the episode of Pernull in which Pierre and Monique made the jump to Austria to start a B&B there, we were glued to the tube, because what they did, we wanted that too! Exactly that! The building with accompanying plot appealed enormously and we also liked the business model they had devised for the B&B.
Completely over the moon, we started brainstorming about the possibilities of setting up something similar and we worked hard to work out our plans and put them on paper. Now a suitable location and voilà ! But actually realizing our dream for the future went less quickly than expected, because we couldn't find a location in Austria that really made us happy. Secretly we were just a bit spoiled by the “I'm leaving” episode because that was the ultimate place for us. However, we kept searching, visited various buildings and even had a test sleep at one of them. But it was always just not. We are not quitters, but sometimes our spirits fell.
Until a message appeared on Facebook at the beginning of 2020: “Sometimes something comes along in your life that you can't let go of”, written by Monique Kloosterman (the lady from the infamous “I'm leaving” episode). My heart started to beat faster… what is she writing… they want to sell their Gästehaus because they have found something else? No, I see that wrong… yes, it really is there!
Long story short: we immediately sent a message to Monique asking if they were actually going to sell their guesthouse and if Robbie and I could come and have a look. Monique replied warmly: “Yes, we are indeed going to sell 'our baby'! Why don't you come here for a few days, then you join us in the company, then you get a feeling and you can see if you like it. ” So we did that right away! And as hoped (but actually also expected) it was really EVERYTHING we were looking for. Once back in the Netherlands, we thought about it carefully and then let Monique and Pierre know that we would like to buy their accommodation.
And now we are the owner of Gästehaus Pernull, the B&B from the “I'm leaving” episode that started it all.
You just don't believe that, do you? Sometimes we still don't!
What else can I tell you about us?
We are both very active people and love the outdoors, so we prefer to do sports outside, walking, skiing, cycling and motorcycling. Until our move to Austria, we lived and worked in Urmond ( south Limburg) in the Netherlands .
